FW: Phil Berg's Talk 03/10/10

Students for Liberty Weekly UpdateMarch 7th, 2010--
Another week has passed us, and what a week it has been! The last few days have been absolutely amazing for the club. First, on Wednesday, we hosted our second speaker event, Starchild. Over SIXTY people attended the event, a record number for our club! Starchild was such an intelligent and entertaining speaker, and it was quite relaxing that the event took place under candlelight. You know, it really makes me proud to think that only a club like ours can host a Republican candidate for Congress followed by a sex worker. We truly believe in liberty for all, and I am proud of that!
Finally, some rather exciting bits of breaking news have occurred in the last three days, which I will go over in this email! Here's an outline:I 3/10 Philip Berg Speaker Event: "Libertarians Against Capitalism"II 3/9 F.I.R.E. Speaker Event Hosted by The Patriot GroupIII Debate With Cal Berkeley DemocratsIV 4/20 Legalize Marijuana Rally With Students for a Sensible Drug Policy

I 3/10 PHILLIP BERG SPEAKER EVENT: "LIBERTARIANS AGAINST CAPITALISM"
Our third speaker event of the semester will be held this WEDNESDAY, MARCH 10TH from 7-8 PM in 263 DWINELLE HALL. Phillip Berg, the Libertarian Party candidate for San Francisco's 8th congressional district seat, will speak to the club in an event entitled, "Libertarians Against Capitalism."
As liberty-oriented individuals, we have high respect for voluntary exchange, but should we be promoting the term "capitalism" with all the negative connotations society holds surrounding it? What caused the current economic crisis and how can we fix it? What can the libertarian movement do to combat the economic destruction of our country? Find out all the answers and more at this great speaker event!

II 3/9 F.I.R.E. SPEAKER EVENT HOSTED BY THE PATRIOT GROUP
The Patriot Group, the student organization that produces the "California Patriot" magazine, will be hosting a speaker event for Greg Lukianoff this week, the president of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (F.I.R.E.). The event, which will be co-sponsored by Students for Liberty, will take place on TUESDAY, MARCH 9TH from 7-8 PM at 100 GENETICS AND PLANT BIOLOGY BUILDING (GPB).
If you haven't heard of F.I.R.E., they are a great non-profit civil rights group that ensures that universities across the countries allow free speech and do not discriminate against students' rights to voice their opinions. Mr. Lukianoff will be speaking about the organization and its influence across the country in protecting the First Amendment. This is going to be a very exciting event that I encourage all Students for Liberty members to attend. I'll sure be there!

III DEBATE WITH CAL BERKELEY DEMOCRATS
There have been some exciting new developments this past week regarding our debate with Cal Berkeley Democrats. After weeks of waiting, the Undergraduate Political Science Association (UPSA) has finally contacted me about working out the specifics with the Dems on the debate. We will be working out all the details at a meeting this week. Hopefully by the time of the Philip Berg speaker event, we will know when the debate will take place!
If you have any suggestions about planning the debate, please email me at caseygiven@....
IV 4/20 LEGALIZE MARIJUANA RALLY WITH STUDENTS FOR A SENSIBLE DRUG POLICY
As I announced at our last regular meeting, Students for a Sensible Drug Policy has agreed to co-sponsor our Legalize Marijuana rally on April 20th (4/20). We are already planning to have a poster-making party with them on Saturday, April 3rd. I'd like to stress the party aspect of the event because it will not only be a productive time to create the posters, but it will also be a social party. It's going to be a blast!
As if that's not exciting enough, Students for Liberty (the national organization) has generously given our club a $200 grant for the rally! That's right, we are going to be well-funded for this event! So, we need to make it great!
We will start to plan out the specifics of the rally in the upcoming weeks. I was thinking something along the lines of having different club members of SFL and SSDP give short speeches about different topics regarding marijuana (medicinal purposes, legality, affect on crime, etc.). If you have any ideas for the rally or would like to speak at it, please email me at caseygiven@....

And, this email is done! As always, if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, please feel free to email me. Other than that, I hope to see everyone at the Philip Berg speaker event this Wednesday!
