Front row seats at the theater

The reason we run out of money is because the Democrats use the general fund as their campaign war chest. ; They have no limits when it comes to buying votes with our tax money. Literally no limit. They will spend whatever it takes. Republicans have done it too. Bush signed the prescription drug benefit for that exact reason… but those lapses aside, the right side of the isle is always the one saying “enough is enough”. Never the left side. They literally know no bounds when it comes to retaining political power using the general fund.

The Shutdown is a political calculation, to be sure, designed to make political opponents blink in a game of chicken. What makes it work is that whomever can spin blame the best, wins… and any voter who buys into this way of thinking, is a part of the problem. ; They do it because they can count on you to be their prize.

And the shut down really isn’t a shut down anyway. It’s a 17% reduction in spending… so let’s not make it more dramatic than it is.

And nobody is going to change politics so that the parties don’t try to win politically, but we can recognize when we become part of the game.

But there is something else going on here. Not content with simply winning over minds in the blame game, this time around the left is doubling down. Specifically, the executive is turning on the American people with all deliberateness, hoping to add rage to blame.

Normally, the politicians use the budget as a sword in battle against each other.

This time, the people themselves are being targeted for abuse, in order to USE them against political enemies. In smaller scale, it’s known as the illegal act of inciting a riot.

The definition of terrorism is “The use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, especially for political purposes. What is happening now is perilously close. It’s using fear to motivate politically.

That the shutdown is what is providing this opportunity is immaterial. What matters is that Obama is seizing it, and turning, very specifically, on the American people. He’s causing harm intentionally, above what would have happened if he simply closed down 17% of the federal government.

His true job is to do all he can to insulate the public from the “shut down”… having the federal government take it on the chin. After all, he’s the one that can target where the cuts happen. He’s the executive.

And we know the philosophy: "You never let a serious crisis go to waste.”

He is maliciously doing the precise opposite of shielding the populace from harm, pushing all pain, with great deliberateness, directly on to the people, even when he has to spend federal dollars to do so…. Very much the opposite of a “shut down”.

This speaks to him, and how he manages politics. It speaks to his moral and ethical core… and has nothing to do with the shut down.

You can see him working it in advance, in his remarks about how Republicans were “holding a gun to the head of the American People”. This rhetoric, grotesque to be uttered by a president, (precisely the kind that Democrats blamed candidate Palin for when Gabrielle Giffords was shot) is a clear precursor to what is going on now. As the executive, he gets to “aim the gun” and he knows this full well, even if the low information voter does not. His gamble is that if he aims at the head of the American People, as he prophesized, and can blame it on Republicans, he win’s big. It’s all too close to the abusive husband that says to his wife: “If you don’t stop making me angry, you’re going to pay.”…. and then as per prophecy, raises his hand and strikes. He warned her… and see, it came true.

To show full well how this is being manipulated, the Amber Alert web site was shut down… (while Michelle Obama’s utterly pointless “Let’s Move” web site stayed up).

Maybe Obama didn’t notice the Amber Alert site was down, as he was too busy golfing on the federal golf course he kept open for himself.

But he forgot the basic rule… you can’t go after the children. On this issue, the press would not go along. When the press went bad for Obama about the Amber Alert site, suddenly, the site went back up. Just like magic.

It’s one thing to use manipulation with your political opponents… disgusting, but political reality. It’s a vastly different thing to intentionally bring harm, misery, and inconvenience down on voters.

This is particularly interesting in the light of the home-rule movement, where a week ago, the federal government voluntarily withdrew its services.

I wish we had been better organized to commence self-government. But this can serve as a model to recognize the "shutdown's" executive sanctions against the people, as a device to achieve home-rule, by the regions own assemblies and congresses.

The longer the feds conduct these sanctions, the more opportunity there is, to establish the operation of self-governance.

I *wish* the "government shutdown" was resulting in a 17% reduction in spending or even a 1% reduction. Unfortunately I think closer to the opposite is true.

If government employees are paid later for the time they are furloughed, which the media seems to be assuming will happen (and, sadly, they're probably correct), it will *increase* spending from what it would have been otherwise, although some reports of the cost of the "shutdown" are exaggerated because they are treating fines and revenues not collected as a negative when in fact it's a positive. (I don't think I need to explain to libertarians why government debt incurred as a result of stealing less money from people without reducing spending is FAR different in economic terms from government debt incurred as a result of spending more while holding the level of theft constant.)

There is also the issue in all this that what they decide to fund and not fund during the "shutdown" reflects statist priorities, not what the public wants (see thread from SFBayCannabisCommunity list below).

I just hope the House Republicans stick to their apparent strategy of restoring funding to various government operations a little bit at a time so that eventually the public pressure on them to "end the shutdown" will be largely gone and only Obamacare and perhaps a few other objectionable things are left unfunded. They should be pressured to do just that, but they are about as reliable as a broken clock coincidentally giving you the right time.

I'm liking this discussion. Let's expand the group a bit and see if there are some more contributions, especially along the lines of what we can do about our complaints, with a nationwide congress of participants.

The "shutdown" is also entailing some additional government spending-like the armed guards now posted on the Colorado River to keep people from floating through the Grand Canyon.
