SF Residents Say No to Surveillance Cameras
On January 17, the ACLU-NC along with dozens of activists and community members turned out to voice opposition to Mayor Gavin Newsom's request for 25 new surveillance cameras. Unfortunately, the San Francisco Police Commission approved the Mayor's request but because of community pressure, the Commission did require additional safeguards, including a comprehensive evaluation of the camera's effectiveness in fighting crime; a plan to turn off the cameras during permitted, political demonstrations; and a clarification that photos recorded will be destroyed after 14 days.
