Hi John,
Good guess, but I was referring to the first Peronista administration in Argentina, where I grew up. My family was not unfamiliar with such administrations, since we had migrated from the rule of Getulio Vargas. However the Vargas regime could never achieve the level of discipline that Peron could, because Brazil is so amazingly socially, racially, and economically diverse.
I guess moral of the story is that even a Libertarian like me can attest that not all repressing regimes are unwanted by the public; sometimes a choice is made in favor of predictability and efficiency and against "liberty."
BTW before you ask why did we leave if the place was so good -- we left when the feathers started flying and bombs fell way too close to my Dad's store downtown, as the Treasury's printing presses that were responsible for all that magnificence ran out of ink. Sounds familiar?
