Examiner Publishes Response To My Op/Ed

Dear Everyone;

The Examiner published this LTE in response to the OP/ED I wrote about
cutting the minimum wage and cutting income taxes for low-wage workers. It's the
usual exploitation of the workers and those at the top making all the profits
and increase the taxes on businesses and the wealthy.

Too bad he ignores the fact if there weren't any "obscene profits" there
would be no money to hire workers or keep them hired and if the wealthy didn't
have money to invest there would be no businesses to tax.

Another point that is rarely noted is that the rate of homelessness
increases after enactments of increase in minimum wage laws.
A study of all minimum wage or living wage laws in the USA over the last 10
years would show a resultant systematic increase in unemployment and
homelessness, as marginal workers lose their jobs.

The organizations that service the homeless are usually the same ones that
lobby and work for increases in minimum wage laws.
Coincidence?
Or is it simply using the coercive power of laws and government to increase
the demand and funding for this particular set of services?

Its not much different than MUNI unions lobbying for lightrail or transit
lanes to replace auto lanes in SF on important routes such as Market, Van Ness
and Geary.

Dear Sarosh;

  The loss of jobs has been quantified. For each 10 percent raise in the minimum wage, on average 2.1 percent of the people affected lose their job. For women the effect is even worse.

  Should the changes go through about 1.4 million people will be affected. The effect of the two 50 cent raises the governor proposes (a 14.8 percent increase) will cause about forty-three thousand low wage earners to lose their jobs and many more to have their hours reduced.

  And in the meantime, people who want to work will be told they can't work for less - it's for their own good and to try to do so is against the law.

Hard economics as well as puffery. Whoda thunk it?

Nice going, Richard.
