Edwards

If John Edwards thinks he is going to rally the poor and win an
election on their votes he is ignorant of history. The poor, for the
most part, are too spiritually impoverished even to bother to vote.
There is of course a poverty problem but in this country it is mainly
an issue of
spiritual poverty, manifesting itself in violence, broken families,
addiction, an entitlement mentality, ignorance, television watching,
quitting school, etc.

None of these problems can be solved through redistribution of wealth.

To the extent they can be solved, the solution is individual to
individual. Think of some of the "poor" of your extended families as
I think of the poor of mine. In my case they are poor through some
combination of substance abuse, trouble with the law, ignorance,
broken families, and inability to hold a job.

Redistribution of wealth does not solve these problems.

Agreed, and I think there is a good case to be made that it actually contributes to these problems.

Dear Derek and Steve;

One small addition to the posting in your statement it "contributes"
to the problem - it also actually creates the problem. The people who
start sipping at the teat of government largesse - they never get
weaned and are always waiting in line for more and end up like Oliver
Twist - " Sir may I please have some more? "
