Don't Forget To Get Your Excise Tax Telephone Bill Refund

Dear Everyone;

Just a reminder you do not have to pay a penny more in taxes than you need to and you can get a refund if you already haven't claimed it on your telephone bill excise tax and as the saying goes every little penny paid back to you counts.

The IRS is issuing a one time refund for the telephone excise tax that is collected on your phone bill for long-distance or bundled service.

The courts have decided that the tax does not apply to long distance service as it is billed today so they are issuing refunds. If you paid long-distance excise taxes for service between February 28, 2003, and August 1, 2006, then you are eligible for the excise tax refund.

If you only have a cell phone you may also be eligible but you will need to check your phone bills between February 28, 2003, and August 1, 2006 to see if you paid this tax. (or contact your cell phone provider)

You can find out more at the IRS website at:

If you have all of your phone bills between February 28, 2003, and August 1, 2006 you can figure out to the penny how much you are owed and submit that on IRS form 8913.

The IRS has made it easy to figure out how much you are owed.

For those who can claim:

One exemption, the standard refund amount is $30;
Two exemptions, the standard refund amount is $40;
Three exemptions, the standard refund amount is $50;
Four exemptions or more, the standard refund amount is $60.

And you can claim the refund simply by filling out one additional line on whichever tax form you use (1040, 1040A, 1040EZ, etc)

The refund is more complicated for businesses and non-profits (but also more lucrative) so be sure to read about it at this link:

If you have already filed your taxes and didn't request the refund you should be able to file an amended return.
