I don't know if there was any one specific thing that prompted former police chief George Gascon to change his views toward the SFPD, but the DA, whose office is traditionally cozy with the department, has lately been a champion of reform, drawing the wrath of the powerful Police Officers Association which generally seeks to justify and defend most police abuse instead of trying to root out the officers who engage in it, and resist any meaningful attempt at reform. Their response to abuses like wrongful shootings is, "Give us yet more power!" (i.e. let us have Tasers). I don't think so!
