DEA agents apologize for forgetting college student in cell for four days

Hi Harland,

This is an interesting article, but I think it has the earmarks of an "urban legend."

Think about it. To leave this student in a holding cell without anyone checking on him for four days is even beyond the DEA's ability to f**k up. And they could f**k up real bad, and regularly. Besides, given how "avid" and "conscientious" DEA agents are in conducting drug raids to beat up We the People, steal their stash and other property, and most of all, arrest said We the People, how come that student didn't have any new company in his jail cell in four days?

I'm afraid the story isn't true. File it as "Urban Legend" along with "man made climate change."

Thanks for reading.

Sorry, as odd as it may seem, this story is unfortunately TRUE.

It was covered on NPR this morning and is in all the headlines on every newspaper in the country today, many of them splashed across the front page. This young man was in the intensive care unit of the hospital for the better part of a week after he was rescued from the DEA's detention center, as he was suffering from kidney failure when they finally found him.

This is more than just a black eye for the DEA. Some heads had better roll in the wake of the inevitable lawsuit.

Terry,

Since when is NPR (The Nincompoop People's Radio) a model for broadcast
news integrity?

Those headlines in "every newspaper in the country" you referred to, did
that include the New York Times? Now that's a model of news reporting
integrity. I think.

This reminds me of a standup gag that the late Lenny Bruce once
performed. He would complain that he couldn't trust any of the daily
newspapers for their integrity in reporting except for one. He then
unfold a sheet of newsprint that shows a front page from The Jewish
Daily, written in English, with the rest written in either Hebrew or
Yiddish.

So what is today's Jewish Daily in print or broadcast?

Anyhow, let's stipulate for the moment that this story, however bizarre
and incredible, is true. But should it prove to be untrue, a hoax, I
reserve the right to say, "I told you so!"

I didn't know the San Diego (where the story took place) DEA has holding
cells in its headquarters, did you? But why would they bother with
having holding cells since it will cost them money to feed the
"residents" and maintain the cells? Besides, wouldn't the DEA work with
the San Diego Police's own narcs in such drug raids? It should be a
collaborative effort, shouldn't it? Is the DEA even allowed to work
independently of the local police? Would the local police even tolerate
this? I don't think so.

If the DEA worked with the San Diego police, as it seems likely,
wouldn't the DEA hand over the "criminals" to the San Diego police for
processing? Presumably, San Diego employees in charge of the holding
cells would be more attentive to their "guests."

But even if the story is true, and lawsuits are filed and paid for, do
you think the government's War on Drugs (really a War on We the People,
through its enforcement of laws against "illegal drugs") will step back
even one inch? And who in the DEA will have to personally account, let
alone pay, for this "oversight"? Do you think anyone will lose their
job? (I don't recall, but did Eric Holder issue an apology?)

I notice the victim was an Asian male. What do you think would have
happened if he were, instead, black?

Anyhow, thank you for your comments. Let's see how this story unfolds.

Alton,
Thanks for commenting. At first the story did seem unbelievable. However, I saw so many ways to check it, the DEA, the hospital, Chong's lawyer, court filings, the other released prisoner, etc, that it seemed unlikely that the reporter was being fooled. Of course, Chong's account is a little confused. That is because the guy was in a coma and had ingested an unknown drug. (Imagine, he found drugs left by the last guy in the holding cell.)
