CPI lies

It seems to me that if a modern economy were on something like
the gold standard, various independent substitutes for scarce
gold-based hard currency would tend to fill any unmet demand for
additional money in the system. While not as universally
negotiable as a government legal tender based on gold,
everything from street drugs to store gift certificates could
essentially function as money in the economy to a certain
extent, taking up any deflationary slack -- no?

Are y'all aware of "local currencies" such as Ithaca Hours
(www.ithacahours.com)? They're faith-based but not fiat, which I
think is wonderful.

I've heard of them; Ithaca's independent currency has been written about by libertarians.
