While obviously not the same as the abolition in 1865 of the horrible practice of plantation slavery in the United States that the Juneteenth holiday celebrates, for many people of all backgrounds alive today, the end of Lockdown represents an end to the most extreme legal denial of freedom that they have personally experienced.

During the past year, far too many government officials, both elected and unelected, have violated their oaths to uphold the Constitution and sought to dictate private health decisions and control the most minute aspects of our daily lives via an unprecedented deluge of authoritarian mask-wearing mandates and restrictions on where we can go, how we can associate, and what we can do, not seen during previous pandemics, in conjunction with a massive propaganda campaign.

This is a day to join with Libertarians in remembering that people can and have survived much worse enslavement, and to celebrate its abolition, while recognizing that ALL forms of slavery are morally repugnant, and as Martin Luther King reminded us, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

Standing up to oppose modern-day authoritarianism in its myriad forms including not just dictatorial orders invoked in the name of “public health” (often flying in the face of actual science), but police abuse, anti-immigrant restrictions, anti-trans laws, involuntary taxation, the mass incarceration of millions still behind bars for things that are not even real crimes, and much more, is honoring the legacy of African-Americans and others who were once legally bought and sold as property. Not to mention their descendants today who often suffer disproportionately under the statist ideology that says those in power have more of a right to run YOUR life than you do.

No cover charge. Reservations not required. Hosted by vineyard owner Whitney Mello and northern California Libertarians. For more info, or if you need a ride or can offer a ride, contact Libertarian Party of California northern area coordinator Jia Christopher – jchristopher[AT]ca.lp.org.
