The following comes from a document I found online called "FasTrakStrategicPlan#12E374.doc" by Rod McMillan of the MTC (Metropolitan Transportation Commission), draft version dated May 2006, written for the Bay Area Toll Authority:
That kind of thing is a nightmare. I was in Australia last fall with a rental car. There were signs on the road saying it was a toll road so we kept looking for a toll both. None.
Six months later we got a notice that-as per our car rental agreement (no one had explained how this worked)- my credit card had been charged $45 (about $9 for the toll and the balance as a penalty b/c the car rental co had to deal with it). There was a phone number on the toll signs but we didn't have a cell phone with us and in any event wouldn't have known to call.
