Marcy,
That's OK, no hard feelings, we're all allowed to have a little fun
from time to time. 8) But seriously, we're not talking about that
big a population here. If we put this to a vote of the general
membership, I'm willing to personally email each person directly on
these lists who does not appear to be voting of his or her own
initiative.

Starchild,
I knew my "Yours in Action" would elicit a response! Sorry, I could
not resist it!Your suggestion that we ask people by name for a vote would be
workable for me only when we have a limited number of people from
whom we wish to elicit a vote, such as the ExCom. Otherwise I post to
the Activist list and expect action from all in the Activist list.I am ready to move to working on the curb rights language this
weekend, based on the wishes of those who voted. If I do not see
enough input on the language (especially from experienced people like
you), I will refer this subject back to the Ballot Initiative
Committee (composed of you, Phil, Mike E., and anyone else who wants
to be in it), where you all can start all over if you like.Marcy

Action? I'm all for action. May I remind you I'm the one who
got the
ball rolling on this whole concept, and we probably wouldn't even
be
discussing it right now if it wasn't for me? I'm not suggesting we
stand motionless. I'm proposing a specific vote, in a specific, fairly
short time frame. There is a difference between just having an
open-ended discussion, where preferences may be stated, often
ambiguously, and calling for a vote on a specific question in a
specific time frame. When you were polling the officers, you asked
specific people by name how they were going to vote. That was good, and
it prompted responses. There's no reason we can't do the same thing
with people on this list. And this is not just something I'm saying
because the officers picked a curb rights measure when I think a
marijuana measure would have more going for it. I have been sayingall
along that we should have a group vote in order to get as much
participation as possible, and maybe even use some kind of weighted
voting when we vote in order to secure commitments.Yours in liberty,
<<< Starchild >>>Starchild,
1. Regarding the "two-part" vote: The respondents answered the
question by voting for a particular initiative, thus intimatingthat
they felt there were enough hands on deck to proceed with picking
an
initiative.
2. Regarding seeking the preference of the membership: I am at a
loss as to what you think we have been doing for the past coupleof
weeks. Everyone on this list was free to express their
preference.
Those that wished to do so, did. If they did not recall the
initiatives listed on the Minutes, they could (as Michael E. did),
ask for the list again.3. My own personal experience has been that a group can choose to
either pick up the ball, run with it, and hope to get as near tothe
finish line as possible; or can stand motionless, debating on the
proper procedure of picking up the ball. So, as far as I am
concerned, we have picked up the ball. Starchild, what have you
chosen to do?Yours in Action

Two days ago, you asked for a two-part ExCom vote (see
below). Now you
seem to be stating that a vote has taken place only on the second
part
of the question and that we're ready to proceed. Personally I'm
fine
with presuming we ought to have an initiative and simply focusing
on
selecting one, but it's confusing when it's stated that a vote is
going
to be held one way and then it is actually conducted differently.
More critically, from my perspective, you seem to be
indicating that
this ExCom vote is the only vote we are going to have on choosing
an
initiative. While our procedures do not *require* a more general
vote,
I previously suggested that this important decision really ought
to
be
made by the membership as a whole. Neither you nor anyone else
said
they disagreed.
Therefore before proceeding further, I recommend that you put
the
issue to the general membership, listing the various initiatives
and
advising that the ExCom has voted to recommend that we pursue the
curb
rights initiative but this is not binding, and give people until
midnight at the end of Sunday to vote (that's a bit longer thanthe
two
days you gave the ExCom members, but we're talking about more
people
plus the fact that some folks don't really do email on the
weekends). I
would also urge you to give some thought as to voting method --
should
it be one person, one vote, or weighted by pledges of money or
signatures? If the latter, I would encourage you to add that those making
pledges
should make them in the form of either dollars, number of valid
signatures, or both (not in hours), and that you actively solicit
pledges and record those pledges. If this all seems like too muchwork,
you can always delegate the task. I would be willing to take
charge
of
conducting such a vote if no one else wants the responsibility.
Yours in liberty,
<<< Starchild >>>Looks like curb rights to me! And my apologies to Michael E. for
my
indicating on a previous e-mail that he had not voted for a
particular initiative (he did, curb rights).Phil, your e-mail analysis captures the essence of a curb rights
initiative! Mike A., what a great e-mail, thanks for your vote.I have not yet heard from Jawj on her preference; however, even
if
Jawj picks marijuana rights, curb rights still has more votes.
(For
the record, I purposefully did not ask for a deciding ExCom
vote,
where unanimity would be required.)
Now on to step #2? Ironing out the writing on Phil's proposal?
Help
from Michael E., the other writer-volunteer?
Heck, the way I see it, even if we get only a couple of thousand
signatures, we still will have furthered the cause of freemarkets by
confronting the stranglehold the taxi companies have on this
town.
Marcy
I would like to summarize and ask for an Ex-Com Vote (Jawj,
Mike
Acree, Phil, Marcy). So far, we have (again, please correct me
if I
am wrong): Marcy wants the curb rights, Phil wants the curb
rights,
Mike Acree has not voted, Jawj has not voted. As far as
commitment
goes: Marcy will commit at least one hour a week to whatever
initiative is chosen, Phil has already committed to work, MikeAcree
has stated he cannot help at this time, we have not heard from
Jawj.
From the activists not in the ExCom: Mike Denny, Mike
Edelstein,
and
Starchild have committed their support.
I would like a two part vote from the ExCom within the next two
days
(providing a decision and a time table,as Starchild suggested):
1. Do you think we have enough hands on deck right now to go
with a
ballot initiative for the November elections? Yes or No
2. If the answer is Yes, which specific initiative from the
list do
you pick?
Thanks,
Marcy
