Ballot Arguments/East Bay LP Meeting

Is anyone else going to try to submit any arguments against the June ballot measures? As Justin noted at the March meeting, tomorrow at noon is the deadline for submitting opponent arguments for the lottery process. I'm going to visit the Elections Dept. this afternoon and check out what they've got with an eye toward writing an argument against at least one measure.

  Tonight is also the joint meeting of the Contra Costa and Alameda County Libertarian party chapters. It's at a Chinese restaurant called Yang Chow, across from the Grand Lake Theater at 3211 Grand Avenue, in Oakland. If you'd like to go and can drive, I could use a ride -- otherwise I'll go by BART and bike. I'm at (415) 621-7932.

I found out at the Elections Dept. that of the four measures, A, B, C, and D, the only one I was really interested in writing an argument against was Prop. A (Chris Daly's "homicide prevention" initiative), and the opponent argument on that measure has been preempted by Supervisors Ma and Elsbernd.

  If anyone wants to submit an argument against B (Eviction disclosure ordinance), C (Appointing Board of Supervisors members to the Transbay Joint Powers Authority), or D (reserving Laguna Honda hospital for elderly and long-term patient care) you have until tomorrow at noon. My feeling is that none of these measures are particularly desirable, but none seem awful either, and I decided the issues involved aren't that compelling to me.

Dear Starchild and Everyone Else;

  Some brief thumbnails on the initiatives.

  The ballot measure B eviction notice sponsored by Chris Daly was originally vetoed by Newsom and Daly used the Supervisors placement clause to put it on the ballot. This was the requirement that buyers for TIC's and Ellis act be informed if anyone was evicted to put the building on the market.

  Measure C was put there by Chris Daly as part of the wording requires the Supervisor who lives in the East Bay Transit Center supervisorial district to be appointed to the board. Guess whom that is? Surprise Surprise Surprise.

  Measure D for Laguna Honda was put there to basically designate Laguna Honda exclusively for elderly as some druggies had been dumped there and caused problems with the elderly etc etc etc.

Ron,

  Good summary. I'd avoid the term "druggies" though -- it just fuels the kind of bigotry toward people who use banned substances that has given us the "war on drugs."
