Hi All. Here's the agenda this month's meeting. It will be a no-nonsense
meeting due to the Department of Elections finalizing the ballot measures
for the November election, and we have 25 to plow through in the allotted 2
hours. I eliminated the Activist Reports and Announcements for this
meeting so we can focus and get through at least all the major ones for the
arguments due next Thursday morning August 18 at the Department of
Elections. If those folks who volunteered to write arguments at the last
meeting can bring your arguments to the meeting, that will be great so we
can "bless" them and then focus on the rest.
I've started going through the roster and will try to be finished with them
all by Saturday. As a quick summary, we have 3 bonds, 1 parcel tax (for
Les), another real estate transfer tax (against the super rich--class
warfare again), another sugary beverage tax, and another sales tax increase
(.75%). The tree tax I'm happy to report did not materialize, but rather
it turned into another setaside for $19 million--not great, but considering
that they were talking about a parcel tree tax of $35 for most residential
properties, I think the compromise they worked out was reasonable since
these supervisors just cannot control their spending addictions. My
feeling is to leave this one alone and not submit anything on it, but
others may feel differently. These would be the most obvious ones to
tackle for next Thursday. Another crazy one is "Public Advocate," more
government bureaucracy for sure, but I will check with the Department of
Elections before Saturday's meeting as to any pre-empting going on, since
there's no point wasting any effort on this one or others that may be
pre-empted by folks at City Hall. Surprisingly, looking at who is opposing
which measures, Peskin's name popped up more often than I would have
figured.
By the way, don't forget the vegetarian dinner/gun control debate tonight
at 6 PM. These are leftist vegetarians and we don't want to toss poor
Malcolm to them. So show up and support him, if you can!
