Aubrey and I went to table at SFSU yesterday, however it turned out
to be during the school's spring break. Most of the buildings were
closed and there were few students about. However we brought plenty of
fliers and I had my tape gun, so we went around instead putting up
tons of fliers in many different areas of the school, especially the
Humanities building (my old journalism program haunts, and home to
many liberal faculty!)
We also were able to enter a couple of the student resident housing
buildings and put fliers up there, although we were approached by a
friendly student RA, Alyssa, and told that we should get permission to
post first, otherwise we might get in trouble or have our fliers
removed. She gave me her email address <apercell@mail.sfsu.edu> and
told us we could send her stuff in the future and she'd try to get it
stamped for approval and might even be able to make some copies. She's
the RA (resident advisor) for Mary Park Hall and Mary Ward Hall
through June 2012. So that could be a useful contact. I don't think
she's necessarily libertarian, just friendly/helpful -- but she did
mention her annoyance with the fire marshalls, who've been trying to
make them take down their bulletin boards and telling them that they
can't have any furniture in the common areas of the building,
allegedly for fire hazard reasons. It was obviously a load of
regulatory B.S. -- they have *plenty* of space in these buildings.
Alyssa said they were "trying to make the place look like a prison."
We also stumbled across a meeting of some partisan group called the
California Democratic Council in one of the campus administration
buildings -- I had to wonder whether they were getting the meeting
space for free through some cozy arrangement with the school.
Anyway, we both felt it was a successful undertaking -- we got lots
of fliers up in visible locations, and while many will probably be
removed quickly, some probably will remain long enough to be seen by
many students. We're hoping for some inquiries as a result -- it's
possible we may get some complaints too.
I also designed a new LPSF sign-up sheet, which we of course did not
end up using, but which should come in handy for future events. I
uploaded the document to the files section of the LPSF-Activists list.
