Action Item: Arguments against ballot measures – Who can pitch in?

Who can help research the measures on the local ballot this November, or write an argument against one of the bad ones on behalf of the LPSF?

So far, Trip is writing two (against the school bond measure Prop. A, and the measure increasing firefighter pension costs, Prop. H), Jawj is writing one (against the measure increasing nurse and 911 operator pension costs, Prop. I), and I’ll likely write an argument against at least one other besides the Great Highway closure (Prop. K), which is largely written and which I’ll post when I have a draft ready to share, as well as helping edit whatever other folks may submit.

I’ve written a draft argument against Prop. K (the Great Highway closure) and am struggling to get it down to the required number, hopefully leaving a few extra to spare for additional signatories, if we can get any (their names also count against the word count – for details on how wording is counted, see https://www.sf.gov/sites/default/files/2024-08/Guide%20-%20Ballot%20Arguments%20-%20November%205%2C%202024.pdf).

By the way, I think I may have said at our meeting that opponent arguments can use up to 500 words. If so, I misspoke – it’s actually only 300! So judicious word choice and careful editing are necessary. As a reminder, our arguments must be submitted by noon this Thursday, August 15. Rebuttal arguments (due next Monday, August 19) from those selected as official opponents are limited to 250 words.

With the chance of arguing against the police officer staffing measure and one of the two measures on city commissions (that would increase the power of the mayor) eliminated by Supervisors Ronen and Peskin pre-emptively taking those opponent arguments, that leaves the following measures we’ll likely oppose without arguments against them:

There are also two measures which are unclear to me as to whether they would be net pluses or minuses, so I consider these lower priority to oppose, pending further research:

Again, you can view these measures and others, including their summaries, Controller’s analysis (which I haven’t looked at yet) and the actual legislative texts, at Qualified measures | San Francisco.

That’s right Jawj, you were just doing that one. Looking at the info at the link below, it appears to be Proposition I. I believe you can find the Controller’s analysis as well as the Ballot Simplification Committee’s language, and the actual text of the measure, under that link.

Trip, I believe you were doing the firefighter pension measure (Prop. H), and the schools bon (Prop. A).

Oh dear, I don’t have them, and was planning to wait until I could read the measures and Controller’s analysis online before writing my piece on the nurses.

Hi Trip,

Got your text message. Unfortunately I think I left my ballot measure descriptions with Jawj to photocopy and forgot to get them back from her when we left, so I don’t have the notes from them on which measures each of us agreed to oppose. I left her a voicemail, so hopefully she can get me that info soon.

The measures have been assigned letters, however, and posted to the Elections Department website, including the controller’s statements for each. You can find them here:

I will be posting an email summarizing stuff from our meeting to the list later.
