A President was not elected. Rather the Electorial College was elected.

A President was not elected. Rather the Electorial College was elected.

An often overlooked fact is that the so-called Electorial College was
elected on election day, not the president.

This means 538 electors were elected today. Later they will meet and vote
for the president. There is no law that requires them to vote for Trump. If
Trump does not get at least 270 Electorial votes then under the
Constitution the election goes to the states and each of the 50 states gets
one vote.

This has never happened before but it could happen this time. Trump is
unpopular in his own party and it is possible the electorial college could
elect somebody other than Trump.
