Yahoo's "Web Beacons"

Anyone know whether this is something that affects us via the use of
Yahoogroups?

The new Yahoo privacy statement calls them "web beacons" - trojans
in the
form of "single-pixel GIF" (read "invisible") images that insinuate
themselves into your browser cache and track your movement across
the web,
even outside the Yahoo network. You can pick these little bugs up
just by
visiting Yahoo - or by reading email sent to you from a well meaning
friend
who uses Yahoo's HTML email.

"Information recorded through these web beacons is used to report
aggregate information about Yahoo! users to our partners. This
aggregate
information may include demographic and usage information. No
personally
identifiable information about you is shared with partners from this
research."

There's more at the full page:
http://privacy.yahoo.com/privacy/us/pixels/details.html

You can opt out in an instant by clicking here:

http://pclick.yahoo.com/p?optout

(You'll have to opt out with each browser you use. I'm not sure how
this
actually opts you out, for how long, etc. You can set the link as your
home page, but don't get any false hopes. You can use ZoneAlarm
Pro to
block ads and other potentially malicious garbage, in addition to your
preferred anonymity tools.)

By the way, please don't use HTML email, whoever your provider may
be.
There are many reasons why HTML should be avoided in email. A
recent post
in Smash The State revealed that regimes may also be using HTML
email to
compromise the security of their prey. HTML can automatically link
you to
remote sites and betray your IP address, operating system, etc. It is
good
security practise to disable HTML in your email client.

I like to play chess in the Lakewood area if anyone is interested.
Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons are best for me. If anyone is
interested in getting together for martial arts, that would be cool
too.

Would like to find friends in the west Denver area with similar
interests & values. -> Shaolin-based Martial arts & sparring,
Writing, Rock music, Sci-Fi, Chess, Libertarian, Objectivist, RKBA,
guns & Shooting, polyamory. "Live to spar and spar to live."
