No, you guys can rejoice -- there is no Direct Action Forum this
month. I went to the School Board meeting earlier this evening, but
John Zhao had been misinformed and the Diversity Index was not on the
agenda after all. I was told at the meeting that others had been
similarly confused, and I can't help wondering if the board is doing
the old bait-and-switch to drain the energy of opponents.
Unfortunately I didn't get there right away since I'd stopped by the
MECA meeting that Chris posted about, and most of the parents who'd
been there had apparently left. I spoke briefly during the public
comment period, and my strong condemnation of the diversity index drew
some applause from the relatively few folks present. I did make a
couple good contacts though. One guy named Sammy Au sounded
particularly libertarian and showed a good awareness of other political
issues like the North Beach eminent domain action and the U.S.
government action in Iraq -- both of which he strongly opposes. I think
with some encouragement he may join the party, so I'll email him and
ask if we can send him a packet.
Another Chinese-American who was present had a report on SF schools
written by none other than our old friend Diallo Dephrepaulez of the
libertarian-oriented Pacific Research Institute, which he said was
excellent. This guy, Bayard Fong, is a staff member of the city's Human
Rights Commission, and someone else said he is a potential leader of
the parents' group for next year. (The fight is really expected to heat
up around March, when the school assignments start getting handed out.)
Yours in liberty,

Is there a DAF? I thought we agreed earlier in the week to meet at
Siam Thai
at 7pm Wednesday night for the candidates to gather the last of their
signatures. Did I misunderstand? Between an insane work week and a
bad head
cold I'm just today finally getting past, I've not paid much attention
to
anything on any of my email lists this past week. I heard something
happened
in Boston today, but I'm still a bit foggy. ;-DUnless someone can show me that I missed an announcement for another
event
Wednesday night, I plan to be at Siam Thai on Wednesday at 7pm. I
assume
Michael Edelstein will be joining me. I think David said he'd be
there to get
my signature, as well. If Kelly hasn't yet re-signed David's
petition, I
suggest she join us, too. Anybody else? Steve? Dilger?--
