Voter registration info

Marcy,

Thanks for your efforts and the update. The turnout among registered Libertarians (reg-Libs) is certainly not what could be hoped for, though as I recollect, many of those who *did* turn out in the past did not vote for Libertarian candidates. Obviously we have our work cut out for us, but here are some suggested goals that I think we ought to shoot for:

-Mailing our slate of candidate and election recommendations to all reg-Libs prior to the first day for absentee voting in future elections

-Mailing out a postcard or letter to all reg-Libs at least once a year, preferably right after the voter rolls are updated so as to minimize the number of bad addresses. This mailing should:

(1) invite recipients to come to our meetings and any upcoming events
(2) invite recipients to join our email lists
(3) encourage recipients to visit (and post to?) the LPSF.org website
(4) solicit questions, feedback, suggestions (create a place on website for this?)
(5) tell reg-Libs how to become members and/or subscribe to our newsletter
(6) thank recipients for supporting freedom by registering Libertarian, and remind them to watch for our recommendations and vote in the next election
(7) include a free LPSF sticker (if we send a letter rather than a postcard)

-Phoning each reg-Lib who voted in the most recent election at least once a year seeking participation, email addresses, and donations in that order

-Sorting the voter data by precinct, listing the precincts in order of how many registered Libertarians they contain, and for the precincts where we are strongest (top 5-10%?) seeking to find precinct captains responsible for making get-out-the-vote calls to the other reg-Libs in their precincts prior to each election. Every member of our activist group or paid party member should also be asked to serve as captain of his or her precinct. Have the membership chair be responsible for communicating with the precinct captains and recording the results of their efforts.

Yours in liberty,
        <<< starchild >>>

Hi Starchild and All,

Yes, I did get the voters' CD from the DOE. The information is on a
database program and on a comma delimited text file. I do not know
how to manipulate the text file; but I was able to open the database
file.

The main fields that we would be interested in are: name, address,
phone, party affiliation, precinct, and whether the voter voted in
several past elections. No e-mail addresses are provided.

After sorting the data for Libertarians and for those who voted on
the November 8, 2005 elections, I get the following: 2,323
Libertarians; 735 of which voted at the booths in November; 367 of
which voted with an absentee ballot; total number who voted: 1,102.

The data on the CD seems to be secured against saving it; so it seems
that all we can do is display it on the computer screen, filter for
the data we want, sort, and print. So, I am thinking that we might
want to produce some labels (which I could do once I succeed in
getting my database program to work properly). Also, we might want
to print names/phone numbers of some targeted precincts if anyone
wants to call (I don't).

I would welcome further suggestions as to what can be done with this
disk.

Happy New Year!!

Marcy

Starchild,

Good to have a plan, and the plan you suggest is a good one. One
more item that should be in such a long-term plan is to develop a
good procedure to keep our LPSF membership list up to date. It would
be counterproductive, for example, to call someone on the phone and
solicit their membership when they are already a member.

At present, there does not seem to be a procedure in place to keep
tabs of who our LPSF members are. I have not received an updated
list from LPCA after our renewal solicitation back in September. Have
you? Has Bryce? If not, I would like to write to LPCA and request
either an updated list or a reason why we can't have one (such as
their not having that information either!)

Starchild, would you like to present your plan at the next meeting,
so it is in the minutes and harder to forget and/or not budget for?
Please let me know, and I will give you time on the Agenda.

Marcy
