U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, a Texas Republican known for his Libertarian views,

Rob, Maybe you might get a return from Paul if you led with the half of DOMA you agree with, and ask him about the other parts? You still amaze me.

Phil

Oh, don't get me wrong -- I disagree with both halves of DOMA, since I
think not only does the second half violate the ninth and tenth
amendments, but also the first half violates the fourteenth amendment.
All I'm saying is that the first half is at least debatable amongst
reasonable Libertarians, particularly those for whom federalism (or
"states rights" as they like to say) is their highest value premise.

The problem for such federalists is that the argument of federalism is
much more powerful against DOMA than it is in favor of it. While the
first half of DOMA may arguably be _allowed_ by the Constitution, it
is by no means _required_ by it. But, conversely, the second half of
DOMA isn't even _allowed_, much less _required_, by the Constitution.

I have written to the Congressman making this very distinction, and I
got a form letter reply that my message would have to be handled by
the presidential campaign and not his congressional office, since I
was not a constituent, claiming FEC and congressional ethics rules
required it. BS! And, of course, the campaign isn't interested in
talking to me. I personally think that any Senator or Representative
who refuses to communicate with voters outside their district ought to
be stripped of all of their committee chair positions, because they're
claiming to not represent the American people as a whole.

Again, I'm not a Paul supporter. If you or one of the other Paul
supporters who is already on his radar (especially if already a donor)
would care to make the point about the second half of DOMA being
anti-federalist and unconstitutional, please do so.

And while you're at it, please give him hell for supporting sodomy
laws (he claims below that had the Marriage Protection Act he
supported already been in place, the Supreme Court would have had no
authority to make the Lawrence v. Texas decision overturning state
sodomy laws):

I can't believe that man was ever nominated by the LP for President.

Rob, Maybe you might get a return from Paul if you led with the half
