At the Libertarian Party of California's Executive Committee meeting held on May 7, 2005 at the Santa Clara Marriott Hotel, Allen Hacker was elected to fill a vacancy on the Executive Committee which was created by Edward Ronquillo's resignation. Mark Whitney was elected as First Alternate to the Libertarian National Committee (LNC) to fill a vacacy which was created by Mark Hinkle's resignation. Susan Marie Weber was selected to head up the Audit Committee.
LNC Representative M Carling reported on the many difficulties which the national LP is currently experiencing. These include severe financial problems, as well as major database problems which are preventing the states from obtaining up-to-date, consistent membership information. The LPC may have to consider withdrawing from the Unified Membership Plan (UMP II).
Numerous committee reports were heard. Webmaster Kevin Takenaga reported that the LPC website is undergoing a major redesign, which should go live by May 15th. Richard Newell is pushing forward with The Libertarian Perspective, a weekly op-ed column written by a rotating group of prominent Libertarian authors, which will be distributed to newspapers throughout California. Mark Whitney's Marketing & Branding committee is working on a marketing plan to reach a variety of targeted audiences. Ted Brown will start recruiting statewide candidates in another month, and reported that Richard Rider may run in the special election for Mayor of San Diego. Executive Director Dave Ruprecht is doing some major donor fundraising, and reported that the LPC office has been cleaned up and organized and has recovered from a nearly-disastrous computer crash.
Secretary Daniel Wiener reported on the results of various email ballots, including the most recent one: A motion was passed on May 6, 2005 authorizing the newsletter editor to publish news about Paul Ireland's arrest on trespassing charges while he handed out anti-tax literature in front of a Post Office on April 15th.
The next Executive Committee meeting will be held on August 20, 2005 at the LAX Sheraton Gateway hotel.
