What an outrageous story Luc, thanks for sharing! Another government injustice-perpetrator living high on the hog... So glad you fought back and avoided paying!
How can self-respecting "progressives", or even "moderate" establishment liberals, justify this stuff? Yet every time they support increased taxes or fees they are supporting it, because money is fungible – every dollar that goes to a "nice" part of government means a dollar less that department needs to be funded in order to give it the same budget, potentially freeing up another dollar or some fraction thereof in the budget to go to some less popular part of government.
I mean, the less popular stuff they spend our money on gets funded somehow. One might even reasonably conclude that stuff like Mr. Bicycle-ticket-writing Cop represent the highest budgetary priorities of the politicians who set the budgets, since the things lots of people actually want from government – functional transit service, properly paved streets, nicer parks and so on – always seems to be what they run short of money to pay for! Then they go hat in hand to the voters asking to be allowed to steal more money from taxpayers and feepayers and threatening that if voters don't say yes, the good cause won't get funded.
When was the last time you saw a ballot measure asking voters to pass a bond measure in order to give cops $482K a year in pay and benefits so they can "serve the community" by writing poor people $195 tickets for riding their bicycles?
