SF Examiner Publishes My Anti-School LTE With Affiliation

Dear Everyone;

After the SF Examiner ran an editorial asking that school funds not be cut I wrote an anti-school LTE pointing out a few facts as to why school reform was a mission impossible. The SF Examiner agreed although they did edit the LTE for space.

Socialist education dictates

Public school reform is a mission impossible (“Don’t shelve economical fixes to state schools,” editorial, March 21). Public schools operate under socialistic education-by-politician dictates.
The recent appeals court ruling against home-schooling says in part: “The primary purpose of the educational system is to train school children in good citizenship, patriotism and loyalty to the state as a means of protecting the public welfare.”
Compulsory school attendance imposes one-size-fits-all, lowest-common-denominator learning. Religious children get mocked. Special-education children receive little help in learning how to learn. Gifted children’s innate intelligence is belittled. Minority children receive inadequate language, reading and writing skills needed in an English-language society.
California’s public schools are a $60 billion public-welfare jobs program for 300,000 teachers and 25,000 support personnel.

The original un-edited LTE said this:

Dear Letters;

Government school reform is a mission impossible. Government schools operate under socialistic "education by politician" dictates and top-down authoritarian, central-planned management by "educrats".

The recent appeals court ruling against home-schooling says in part: “The primary purpose of the educational system is to train school children in good citizenship, patriotism and loyalty to the State as a means of protecting the public welfare."

This is Soviet style socialism as teaching loyalty to the State isn’t getting an education in reading, writing and arithmetic.

Compulsory school attendance imposes one-size-fits-all lowest common denominator learning. Religious children get mocked. Special-education children receive little help in learning how to learn. Gifted children’s innate intelligence is belittled. Minority children receive inadequate language, reading, and writing skills needed in an English-language society.

California 's government schools are a $60 billion public welfare jobs program for 300,000 teachers and 25,000 support personnel. Shut it down.
