There was a mysterious dinner at the St. Francis last year, which I
attended with Mike D., and which I assume was connected with this
development. It was celebrating the new "partnership" between the
Chinese and the African-American communities at Bayview-Hunter's Point.
I didn't know anything about the situation, but it looked an awful lot
like a beads-and-trinkets deal, and I was surprised at the participation
of the African-American community. Politicians were supposed to have
been a heavy presence, presumably for the eminent domain angle, but they
stayed away because of a hotel strike.
