RE: [lpsf-discuss] Previous NY TIMES now RIGHTS AND EQUALITY AND CHOICES

Thanks Rob...I had no idea there was such a large disparity between
"domestic partner" vs. "marriage" status for non-traditional couples.
There are many who see the gay marriage movement as little more than an
attempt by gay people to co-opt the marriage label to make the statement
that their relationships are the equivalent of Matrimony. There may be
some of that but it certainly appears that there are serious rights
violations in the current system. So until we can get the state out of
the marriage business completely, if it takes the "marriage" label to
right the wrong, I'm all for it. After all, it's the relationships and
rights that matter, not the piece of paper from City Hall.

Mike

Let's say "same-sex couples" instead of "non-traditional couples".
I'm pretty sure homosexuality has as long a tradition as heterosexuality.

Btw, my father mentioned that a book he recently read about the exploration of North America by early Spanish explorers describes several native America tribes that had same-sex marriage customs. A tradition that apparently pre-dates the appearance of Catholithism (and any marriage customs associated with it) in the western hemisphere.
