RE: [lpsf-discuss] FW: MSNBC.com Article: Should dementia sufferers be allowed to vote?

Dear Michael;

As Curly of the Three Stooges used to say; " Soitanly! Nyuck Nyuck Nyuck!" Or as they were known in South America : Dos Tres Stupidos.

Dementia some signs as are follows:

Problems with language. This makes it hard to understand what they want. ( Like George Bush)
Poor judgment. Let's attack Iraq they threaten us. ( Like George Bush)

Misplacing things. ( Like George Bush misplacing those Iraqi WMD )
Changes in mood. ( Like George Bush) Ask him about his National Guard service and watch the mood swing.

Hmmm? George Bush suffering from Dementia? Nawww! Couldn't be!

1. I thought the rules on this were pretty clear cut already: if
under a conservatorship (not guardianship) for mental impairment (not
physical impairment) then cannot vote. If not under conservatorship,
then allowed to vote. Tons of old folks are under conservatorship
these days. Perhaps the article in question means to address those
in the twilight zone of presenile dementia -- difficult question; not
that clear cut.

2. From the current Atlantic Monthly letters to the editor: "Slowly
developing cognitive deficits, as demonstrated so clearly by the
President, can represent only one diagnosis, and that is presenile
dementia." Heck, unless under conservatorship, not only can you
vote, you can even become President!

Dear Michael;

This falls under the same category of those people who still

somehow or other manage to vote from " beyond the grave".

Once you have " turned your toenails to the Sun" you shouldn't be

able to vote. If you do you need to have a stake driven through your
heart. Chicago to name one city has for several decades led the
nation in "ghost voting".

So what's so unusual about about demented people voting in

elections? Look at the results of the last election. Talk about
dementia people voting! The results were absolutely maddening. You'd
think with half a mind people could've done better.

As swing states with large elderly populations such as Florida gear

up for another presidential election, a sleeper issue has been
gaining attention on medical, legal and political radar screens: Many
people with advanced dementia appear to be voting in elections --
including through absentee ballot.
