This is from and to a liberal democrat friend of my wife's. She's a
successful black woman salesrep for Symantec. Read from the top down
to see my advice to her. I'll let you know when I get a response.
I'm not holding my breath. I'd never tell her this, but I have more
respect for the title "hotdog stand proprietor" than i do "madame
commissioner". Any more suggestions on how to "improve the status of
women" in California will be passed on.
Well put!
Perfect! Thank you for posting this, Derek.

Subject: My Career in Politics Has Begun!
Hi good friends and family,
You all know about my passion for politics and I wanted to share
with
you my happy news. My official political career has begun. I've
been appointed to the Alameda County Commission on the Status of
Women!!It's all very exciting. I hope to do many things for the women of
this county and the state. You've all been an inspiration to me
and
I look forward to more political offices and campaigns in the near
future. See my official Certificate of Appointment-MaryAnn
Madame Commissioner
(ha! ha!)

Maryann:
Congratulations on your appointment. I hope it's everything you're
hoping for. As you begin your term of office, I have a few humble
suggestions on how to improve the status of women in California.1. Lower taxes so more women or men that want to can afford to stay
home with their children. Too many families have to send both
parents to work because they pay too much tax. Many families today
COULD live on one income if they weren't supporting both themselves
and several government bureaucrats families.2. Eliminate the "nanny tax" which will lead to more affordable
childcare for working women.3. Eliminate all the ridiculous burdensome layers of government
regulation suffocating small businesses. Women are some of the
most
talented entrepreneurs in california. In fact most new businesses
are women-owned. Unfortunately, that means most businesses that
fail
are also women-owned. Small businesses are being strangled by the
massive government bureaucracy.I have many more suggestions for you, but essentially, please
remember that government has NEVER created wealth or prosperity.
That only comes through the rationale self-interest of individual
men
and women working hard to better their own lives. Individuals are
the great prosperity producers. Government can't produce wealth.
It
Derek,
Nice suggestions! Please pass along another one to your friend MaryAnn, if you don't mind: Namely, to work on decriminalizing prostitution, a profession that is overwhelmingly female. Women professionals and their clients shouldn't have to face fines, jail, and criminal records for engaging in voluntary consensual activities between adults.
This suggestion may have added relevance, because I believe that Robyn Few of the Sex Workers Outreach Project was also recently appointed to the commission your friend has joined, although I could be confusing it with an Oakland commission of similar name. Prostitution decriminalization will of course be one of Robyn's main focuses on the commission she sits on.
