Radical proposal

Chris,

I fully agree with everything you say here. If Phil had a good shot of changing the outcome of the race by endorsing Krissy Keefer, I would say it'd be an action worth considering. But the reality is that barring some totally unforeseen major scandal, Nancy Pelosi will be reelected by a huge margin as usual. It would be a major embarrassment for the LP to have a Libertarian candidate for Congress endorse the Green Party candidate. Maybe if they were prepared to endorse our candidate next time around, or in some other race or something, but of course they're not. Even Susan King, a very active GP member with whom I've got good relations, said that if she was in my district, she'd vote for me as her second choice. Of course she also mentioned that she'd vote for almost anyone over Bevan Dufty. Gee, thanks a lot!

I'm all for working with the Greens where it's to our mutual benefit, as you have been doing with Krissy, and building coalitions with them around issues where we're in agreement. But we shouldn't forget that the people leading their party generally have about as ideological an outlook as we do, and it is an ideology starkly at odds with ours. Endorsing an opposing candidate in a partisan race in such a fashion would send the message that we lack confidence in and/or commitment to our own libertarian agenda, and prefer the Greens' approach. Needless to say, such a message would not be helpful to the cause of liberty.

Phil, if you want to do something radical, I'm totally supportive. But we should put our heads together and come up with something creative that will advance our cause. Publicly burning your Social Security card in front of City Hall or something. What do you say?

Love & liberty,
