Aubrey and I have been working on a postcard to distribute to San Francisco voters to inform them of our recommendations for ballot measures in the June primary. I have already picked up a disc with the registered voter information from the elections office, we're just working on crafting the short statements for each measure and putting the design together.
After the convention last weekend, Aubrey and I agree that we should try to reach as many people as possible with this mailing. I believe it's a cost-effective way to promote our party, and with a bit of luck and some careful wording, we might be able to recoup some of the costs of the mailing with new memberships and donations. That's the secondary outcome of this, is that I would like to grow our membership and our newsletter list and attract more people to meetings.
This is an expense, of course, but I do think doing one large mailing is a better way to get the word out and bring people in than advertising in newspapers. Here are some figures for how much this might cost us:
1500: $631.50
2500: $1027.50
It scales fairly linearly. This is for a 2-sided 4.25" x 6" black and white postcard, postage included.
I am leaning toward the 2500 mark on this, so it might cost us around $1000. Please let me know i anyone has an objection! I think we will try to get this out ASAP, before our next meeting. Your feedback is welcome!
The front would contain the LPSF messaging (how to find us, how they can join, ask them to donate) plus an explanation of the recommendations and a reminder to vote.
Thanks,
Nick
P.S: yes, the second image is a joke-- just for fun
Hi Nick. Thanks for working on this. As noted, I am for a big mailing to
reach most of the registered Libertarians in The City (currently around
2,800-3,000). We haven't done a mailing for a while as there was no
election last year, and there were too many propositions on the November
2016 election to even consider sending out a postcard that would be
legible. I favor doing the larger mailing and spending the higher amount
to let more folks know that we are still alive and kicking. Our coffers
are full, and this is a worthwhile expense to reach more folks who would
actually be interested in our recommendations since they bothered to
register.
Hi again,
I have made some updates before sending these out. First and foremost,
I've replaced my text with Aubrey's much improved condensed versions of
our arguments, with some edits from Starchild as well. Please let me
know ASAP if you have concerns, I want to get these mailed tomorrow! https://photos.app.goo.gl/V3T7iG6u2JyWY8M68

Thanks Aubrey and Starchild for your input. I have replaced some of
Aubrey's language with Starchild's revisions-- they are quite good.
I plan to order this tomorrow, to mail to 2500 registered Libertarians.
There are over 3500 in the data set I got from the elections office, so
I plan to select based on the last date the registration was updated
(with the hope that these people stilllive in the city). This goes back to mid-2014, it seems like a pretty
good sample. I might also try to deprioritize voters who never returned
their vote by mail ballot, if possible. Regardless, I plan to mail to
2500 voters.
The total cost of this will be approx: $1027.50
Please voice your objections ASAP!

Hi Nick. Thanks, Starchild, for the editing. I'm 100% OK with sending all
2,500 and spending the $1,027.50 on the project. Nice to hear the number
of registered Libertarians is up to 3,500; I thought the 2,800 figure I
heard at the last meeting sounded rather low. Please send the mailing!
I've just submitted the mailing according to Click2Mail they should be
on their way tomorrow.
We sent 2,678 postcards to registered Libertarians in San Francisco.
I filtered out anyone with a mailing address outside of San Francisco,
because many of these were out of state or international (which would
complicate the shipping and probably not be as effective). Seeing as it
wasn't much more than the 2500 I said previously, I thought better to
just do all of them then arbitrarily filter some out.
The total cost of this was $1064.96 (which includes a $36.69 discount
using a coupon code I found-- pro tip)
We will reach 2,678 Libertarians within the next few days. Exciting!
Thank you all again for your help and support, especially Aubrey and
Starchild for writing the argumentsNick
(PS: I was wrong about the 3500 registered Libertarians, the real number
is close to 2800. I filtered quickly last night by rows containing
"Libertarian" but this included voters who had previously voted
Libertarian but were not registered Libertarian.)
