Please do NOT exempt San Francisco from state density law!

I understand that your committee has received a request by San Francisco supervisor Aaron Peskin to exempt this city from state density laws so that the municipal government would not be required to allow as much new housing construction as is currently the case.

As a San Francisco resident in a long-term rent-controlled apartment, it would be easy for me to take an "I've got mine" attitude and say "Great! I don't want new construction going on around me and taller buildings blocking my views!" But that would be selfish and irresponsible. This city, indeed the Bay Area as a whole, has a serious housing shortage, and I've met many people who cannot afford to live here. We desperately need more units built in order to bring down prices. And those units should be added mainly in already-developed areas like San Francisco, because the alternative is more suburban sprawl leading to more loss of open space.

Please do not listen to self-serving NIMBYs like Supervisor Peskin (a property owner and landlord who stands to see his property values rise more if new construction is restricted). Let builders build in SF so more young people and newcomers can afford to buy or rent in the city. Thank you for reading and for doing the right thing.
