passport fun

Since my passport is full, and now expired, I needed to go get a photo
for my renewal. So while I was out I dropped in at my local camera
shop and asked for a pic. I gave the photographer sort of a half
hearted smile. I smiled because I think that I (and everyone else)
looks better smiling. Half hearted, because I wasn't really
enthusiastic about this task.

The photo guy tells me that there are new regulations coming that
require a closed mouth and that I should give him a straight forward
mugshot. "People look different when they smile" he says. True. I
guess I will also be expected to provide the same facial expression
during my travels going forward.

How does this make me safer again?

They told me that when I got my passport updated early this year too. So I made sure to get mine taken with a smiling photo while it was still legal. 8) I think the woman at Walgreen's was a bit puzzled.

In my raver fantasy, people able to give a genuine, friendly smile wouldn't need a passport, they'd just be free to travel at will. Everybody else would need documents. I'll bet none of the 9/11 hijackers could have produced real smiles.

I believe you are correct. I just recently had my first passport photo
taken at the post office, and they didn't give me any direction on
whether or not to smile. My passport photo now looks about as
threatening as my drivers' license photo. But if you look at the
passport photos for all nineteen of the 9/11 terrorists, not a single
one of them appears to have even the tiniest glimmer of a smile. I
think a great big smile on a passport photo would be a fine gesture to
the host country that you intend no harm to them. Of course, it might
also be a clever disguise, but apparently, past experience demonstrates
that "mug shot" passport photos are perfectly acceptable to the TSA
while "smiling" and "friendly" passport photos are obviously forbidden.
What a strange new world we live in!

Terry,

One great thing about smiles is that they are very hard to fake well. I remember thinking about this when I was in the Army. The walls of military facilities are frequently adorned with photos of the chain of command, and I noticed that the smiles of the career soldiers almost always looked forced. Just being able to turn your mouth up into a smile -- and even this seems to be a real challenge for some -- is not enough. Your eyes may give it the lie. I was not merely observing that the 9/11 terrorists weren't smiling in their photos, but suggesting that they would have been *physically incapable* of producing open, friendly smiles.

Yours in liberty,

Well, you see, the high-tech automated multi-billion-dollar computer face
recognition systems that the Department of Homeland Security is rolling
out to automatically identify faces in any circumstance are thwarted by
complex variables such as the face changing shape slightly, such as by
smiling, frowning, or grimacing. So to keep us all safe, we must not
smile when getting our picture taken, nor when passing through Customs.
If you smile, the terrorists have already won.
