With growing budget deficits, it seems unlikely that Congress will cut the
AMT any time soon. Collecting about $100b now, the AMT could eventually
pass the regular income tax in revenue. Could a campaign to repeal the
regular income tax, with all its privileged deductions, and leave just the
AMT, succeed by the time that happens?
