On second thought (flowers for the newlyweds)

Mike,

When we give people the flowers, we can something like, "I'm sorry you
still have to get permission from the government and pay them money in
order to formalize your commitment to each other!"

            <<< Starchild >>>

OK Starchild, I get the difference. I just want to make sure that we
make the difference really clear...that government doesn't do the
marrying. It's trickier given the obvious role government and politics
are playing in this particular situation. Without altering the intent,
can we think of a way to tighten up the presentation so we distinguish
ourselves from those who are using the situation to increase the status
of the state rather than decrease the influence of the state?

Mike,

Of course the LP has supported people's right to enter into all
types
of voluntary contractual relationships. But marriage is one of those
voluntary contractual relationships. I don't see the harm in saying
that we specifically support the right to marry. We're not saying that
*government* should be marrying anyone, just that a person has the
right to marry whomever he or she chooses.

Make it "supporting your right to a "contractual relationship since
1972" and I'll contribute too.

Mike

Steve,

Giving flowers to the people waiting in line to marry is a
fantastic
idea! How does a pair of roses and a nice little note saying

something

like "Congratulations from the Libertarian Party -- defending your
right to marry since 1972" sound? I'd definitely chip in.

We could by flowers in bulk and go and hand them out with notes
ourselves. Maybe a pair of red roses with a note(?) Anyone willing to
chip in?
