Off Topic - Chocolate Easter Crosses - What Gives?

Dear Everyone;

  I happened to stop in Walgreen's to pick some stuff up and noticed they had chocolate Easter crosses.

  Maybe Mike Denny could commentez vous or a somone else who is religious but isn't chocolate Easter crosses - crossing the line???

  I am not highly religious but gosh and golly - huckerstism is one thing - but what next - Chocolate Christ on a Cross?? It just took me aback to see that.

  Chocolate Easter bunnies yeah - nibble the ears down to the feet - great stuff.

  Should we expect the manufacturing company to get bolts of lightning through the roof or what???

Ron,

  You should've been with me when I was at a bazaar in Mexico a few years ago and came across a stall selling Batman dolls about a foot tall. This wouldn't have been remarkable -- except for the fact that they were crucified on crosses like Jesus icons. I couldn't believe I was seeing something so heretical in ultra-Catholic Mexico, of all places! But then it made a curious kind of sense. In comparison with other branches of Christianity, Catholicism has long been known for the veneration of saints. If you look at the story of Batman, he's basically an ordinary guy who gives up a comfortable life in order to dedicate himself to helping people. It doesn't hurt that maybe he has a few "miraculous" abilities. My guess is that he was simply being adopted as a modern saint into the canon. One might think the fact that Batman is a fictional character would have given pause, but then again... well, I'll leave it at that.

Yours in liberty,

That reminds me: ESPN's self-proclaimed "Sports Guy", Bill Simmons (who before he was hired by ESPN and subsequently moved west, lived in Boston and had his own website as "The Boston Sports Guy") frequently refers to the ex-Boston Celtics legend, Larry Bird (currently Indiana Pacers basketball supremo) as "the Basketball Jesus".

I suppose that the pious must consider this blasphemous. I'm an atheist, and as I was born and raised in Boston before moving to San Francisco, and am still a diehard fan of all the major Boston pro sports teams (while being indifferent to the San Francisco ones) I consider calling Larry Bird "the Basketball Jesus" to be highly appropriate!

David,

  You may be an atheist, but aren't you still elevating Christianity over sports if you talk about Larry Bird as "the Basketball Jesus" but do not talk about Jesus of Nazareth as "the Spiritual Larry Bird?"

Starchild,

     *I* don't refer to Larry Bird as "the Basketball Jesus", Sports Guy (i.e. Bill Simmons) does. I've haven't given much thought to the question of whether Jesus of Nazareth would be deserving of the title "the Spiritual Larry Bird", but it wouldn't make any sense to call Jesus that, since Jesus walked the earth around 1,900 years before Larry Bird did.

Dear David;

  Yeah but if he was around today and got picked up by a team I'd bet his free throw average would be 100% - something to do with the "magic touch".

Ah yes, "DJ" - can't forget about him! He was a fine role player, and had the right initials too!
