Placing one's desires, interests, and well-being above all others does not conflict with teamwork.
Working with a group often aids one's self-interest. Common examples include families, friendships, businesses, and an efficient means of working toward a libertarian society. Individualism involves putting your interests first, and those of the people and causes you love a very close second.
You may have in mind isolationism, or some type of extreme caricature of individualism, not individualism as it is commonly defined.
