(1) I just found another published letter from Mike! (Congratulations!) His
letter about SEIU shutting him out of its debate was printed in the April
issue of the San Francisco Observer.
(2) I'm trying arrange a couple speaking opportunities. One is for talking
to the day laborers who gather on the street (17th & Hampshire) in the
mornings looking for pick-up jobs. Raphael is willing to translate for Mike
to this mostly Spanish-speaking audience. Mayor Brown and the police
department have been trying to shut down the current day labor program,
which is coordinated by a group called La Raza Centro Legal, and force the
workers into hiring halls which are more regulated. I talked to Renee
Saucedo of the program and she said they hold weekly meetings Friday at
8pm. She said she would ask at this Friday's meeting about Mike speaking to
them at the following Friday meeting, and that she doesn't think it would
be a problem. She seemed quite glad to hear that Mike supports the workers'
position, and said we are the first mayoral candidate to contact them. If
for some reason addressing their meeting doesn't work out, however, workers
are apparently out there from 7am to 1pm Monday through Saturday, with
8am-9am being the peak time and we could go and do it without official
arrangements.
(3) We've also been talking about trying to get some female strippers and
sex workers to help with the dunk tank booth at the Haight Street Fair. I
spoke with an acquaintance named Sherice (a Republican, no less!) and I
think she's willing to participate. I also called the St. James Infirmary
(a health clinic for sex workers) to find out about Mike coming and
speaking at one of their meetings, and they are supposed to get back to me.
I think having him come in and talk at different places where sex workers
congregate and then try to sign up volunteers for the Fair afterward may be
the best approach to get them on board.
Yours in liberty,
