Marijuana Party bookstore & headquarters opening (Aug. 1, SF)

The Marijuana Party, as I have previously noted, is very libertarian in its outlook -- their national platform ( http://www.usmjparty.com/platform.htm ) specifically notes that issues were chosen to appeal to Libertarians (with a capital "L"). Their state party website even gives former LPC gubernatorial candidate Steve Kubby his own page ( http://california.usmjparty.com/kubby's_corner.htm ).

This is an important opportunity to build a good working relationship at the local level with another pro-liberty organization, and also to show the cultural leftists who are going to be attracted to the Marijuana Party that libertarianism is their natural political outlook. I know California Marijuana Party head Tony Bowles from Americans for Safe Access, and he is very open to working with the Libertarian Party. In fact I just left a message for him asking to speak at this event. In any case, I hope a number of us can make it down there to officially welcome them.

Yours in liberty,

Starchild:

I bet if you mentioned "the Marijuana Party" to most people, they
would think you were talking in jest about the Libertarian Party.

(full disclosure: I support abolition of all drug laws)

Do *not* blame me for the e-mail below! It wasn't me writing *this*
time!

Jokes aside, it's worth bearing in mind that getting rid of all laws against marijuana is a much more popular cause than most of the positions in the Libertarian Party platform.

Not that I think we should support it proudly because it's popular -- we should support it proudly because it's right.

Yes, we should speak out against governemnt's heavy hand in *all*
instances, because it is right to do so. No, the marijuana issue is
not a "much more popular cause than most of the positions" in the LP
platform, as far as the average San Franciscan (like me) is
concerned.

Marcy,

The average San Franciscan casts a pro-marijuana vote every time the issue comes up on the ballot. Most recently, in 2002, 63% of SF voters approved Proposition S, which encourages the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to enact legislation authorizing the cultivation and distribution of medicinal pot by city officials. As early as 1992, 80% of SF voters gave the thumbs-up to medical marijuana.

Even the nation as a whole is showing progress:

Starchild,

OK, my comment came from my often expressed belief that the LP is
perceived as the S&D Party, while we (especially you) are working so
hard to get the government out of so many other spaces in our lives.
Thanks for the letter to Arnold!!
