[LPSM-Discuss] Re: Publicity ideas for tax freedom day?

Hi Starchild, Harland, and Oleg. After the disastrous Tax Day rally we had
at Civic Center Plaza about 6 or so years ago, I vowed I would never do
another Tax Day rally or protest, but somehow I'm kind of up for the idea
of doing something as you guys mentioned this year since our "Tax Day"
panel discussion definitely won't be until June. If we were to do a joint
project between the LPSF and LPSM, we could probably scrape up a decent
number of participants at one location.

Thanks!
Aubrey

Bump. Starchild mentioned this thread to me the other night, I hadn't
really paid much attention to it before, sorry. I'm in!
Any more thoughts on where is the best place to hold this?

I kind of prefer the idea of rallying at one or two well-trafficked
locations, rather than attempting to cover too many locations with a
smaller number of people at each, as I think it's more solidarity-
building and makes for better photos and video. Getting those out to
social media, etc., is key to maximizing the impact of a protest.>>

But are there any post offices with late pick ups on Tax Day any
more? The USPS site did not list them, and a news story said there
were none. The reason, of course, is electronic filing, (as well
as those trouble makers spreading word of Form 4868). Perhaps it is
a local management option, but if so, this would be an area with
low demand.>>>

a box of water and pens from Costco to offer a little break to
people in line and hopefully get them interested in finding out more
about us. Maybe arrive at 4:30 and stay till it's too dark for
people to see our signs? At this point, it would help to know who is
interested in participating and which post offices you think we
should focus on? I would guess San Mateo and Redwood City, but I
have no rational statistics to support that.>>>

Tax foundation "celebrates" a day when Americans are done working
to pay taxes, which is currently May 1st in California. We could
also speculate on impact of regulations which would push
considerably further. Another way of thinking is just marking it
on Apr 15th when taxes are on everyone's mind. In any case,
liberarians are probably best known to public for not liking taxes
and having some kind of related activities seems approporiate. In
some ideal world, we would have a meeting open to public where we
can answer people's questions about our movement. We obviously do
not have resources, manpower or publicity to do anything grand,
which is why growing party is important :-)>>>>>
So to start with, we could at least create a virtual event with
links to all our anti-tax ballot arguments on web/facebook/etc to
show what we are doing to ease public burden.. Any guess if
creating an actual meeting, perhaps together with neighboring
local parties, has much hope of getting new people or even less
active party members to show up?>>

Hi Nick and All. Sorry, but now I'm out. I completely forgot that I have
to present against props A and F at the general meeting of the Coalition of
San Francisco Neighborhoods on Tuesday night, so I'll have to pass on a Tax
Day rally.

Hope you can organize something since this is the only time of the year
that folks appreciate Libertarians!

So if we have limited resources, probably best to focus on post offices in

Please let me know if my help would be beneficial and what time everyone is
planning to attend. If needed, I can work from home and take off
mid-afternoon.

How about outside Montgomery Street BART in downtown SF? That's about the most high-traffic, visible spot I can think of when people are getting off work in the evening. We used to do Tax Day protests there years ago, and I thought they were pretty effective.

I called and spoke with Harland this afternoon, who indicated near BART would be relatively convenient for people coming up from the peninsula. I suggested he call Nick, as I wasn't certain whether any Tax Day plans were discussed at the LPSF meeting before I arrived on Saturday (or afterward at the social which I couldn't stay for).

Love & Liberty,
                                 ((( starchild )))

In the meantime, I have re-posted a tax day statement of national
libertarian party on our Facebook page:

https://www.facebook.com/libertarianpartysanmateo/posts/2093140434233939

I am still learning things on the go as a PR chair. I would assume that by
default we trust the national party, California party and our neighboring
regional parties and it's Ok to repost their events and stories on social
media, without further comments, as seems relevant. This may be different
with obvious gaffes like recent apparent support of "students for gun
control" by the national party. So anyway, normally I would still call for
a 24 hour discussion, except that that I was hoping to post our specific
tax protest plans which seem to be falling through. Please do let me know
if you see a problem with reposting a national party position. For me, it
seems important to maintain an image. One part of libertarian movement is
not having lots of taxes and if national, state and local parties do not
offer suggestions on reducing taxes, our supporters will feel betrayed.

I was involved in the Montgomery St BART tax day events for a number of years and I didn't think they were effective because most people were leaving work and just wanted to get home… Also I seem to remember that it was a particularly windy area and freezing. However I won't be participating this year so feel free to disregard my opinion.Françoise

All right, my plans for tax day seem to be falling apart. All post offices in San Mateo County seem to close by 5:30. I would guess that most people who have time to stand in line during a weekday afternoon do not pay taxes. Also, one guy standing with a sign probably does not send a message of a serious movement  Is anyone interested in showing up at airport mail center or the like?

Bump. Starchild mentioned this thread to me the other night, I hadn't really paid much attention to it before, sorry. I'm in!

Any more thoughts on where is the best place to hold this?

Nick

We did not discuss it at the LPSF meeting, too much time was wasted from people arriving late and we had to skip over it... anyway this thread didn't seem to have any traction so I wasn't sure who would be interested.

Near BART sounds good to me. Can we start around 5 when people are getting off work? I'll put up an event on the Meetup group.

Oleg,

Generally, there is a short fast moving, or no line at the airport post office until 8:00 P.M., when they have their last pickup with the same day’s postmark. That is when the line forms because the only way to get a timely postmark is to mail certified which takes some time and therefore causes a line to form and move slowly. So there would be a good audience to hand out flyers. Let me know how you make out.

I was hoping you would respond to my question regarding your position in the event of missiles lined up in Cuba. If you prefer not to answer, I certainly understand.

Tom L

Oleg,

I think we have reached my point of this whole conversation. And that is that had we not installed missiles in Turkey and used the CIA for questionable purposes and acted as the world’s police department, the solution to the Cuban missile crisis was exactly the same as if we had done none of those things. To wit, get those missiles removed from Cuba. I think that Nuclear warheads in medium range missiles in Cuba does qualify as an imminent threat. Even if they were only put there in order to achieve a bargain of getting missiles removed from Turkey, the very same good result was achieved as had there been no missiles in Turkey. It ultimately resulted in the successful SALT treaties. I trust that you agree that the wisest resolution of that crisis was reached and it was the same resolution we would have sought had there been no missiles in Turkey. In other words, the resolution we sought and got was not dependent on our prior behavior at all as you had supposed previously. I think it is safe to say that the people in Jordan and Israel who are a few short miles from sites where chemical weapons are being stored and used are at the very same risk irrespective of any events in the past, especially in view of the fact that chemical weapons being stored is a violation of the chemical weapons conference and therefore need to be removed before they end up killing a lot of people, even if by accident.

==== Meet us at Montgomery BART @ 5:00pm ====

Hi,

I've spoken with Oleg and Starchild about this separately, and heard
from Harland as well.
We will plan on meeting outside the Montgomery BART station at 5:00
today. I made 2 signs last night and will have some extra posterboard
and markers for last-minute sign-making.
Here are the signs I made, for inspiration / deduplication
https://photos.app.goo.gl/P3cp8hPHl1lCgVxd2

I might send this on a separate thread as well to make sure it doesn't
get missed (this thread is pretty long and might have been filtered by
some already).

If there is a realistic imminent threat to America, I think the
question would be very different from interfering in Syria where ISIS
is more likely to do us harm than Assad. When it comes to "we are all
going to die" situations, it's well understood that people will do
whatever it takes not to die and apologize for breaking the rules
later. Our only hope is to at least agree on what the rules are
supposed to be and live by them in the course of our normal lives.>
As for the actual Cuban missle crisis as it happened, I think JFK was
able to avoid catastrophic consequences by understanding the full
context of Kruschev and Castro wishing to defend themselves against a
possible attack rather than initiate a nuclear war. Since there were
also American warheads in Turkey pointed at Moscow, launching an
attack from Cuba would also reduce Soviet Union to rubble. If some
completely irrational actor suddenly deployed nukes to Cuba without
any provacation, the solution may well have been to destroy as many
installations as possible without warning to minimize the damage from
the iminent attack. Again, non aggression principle dictates going
ONLY after the evildoers, which would preclude use of weapons of mass
destruction. But, it's likely that people will not stick to their
principles fully when faced with immediate threat of their entire
cities turned into pools of molten rock. What matters is that they
still know what their principles are so that they try to follow them
as much as possible, generously compensate any innocent victims and
strive to avert situations where principles have to be violated.>
Also, 9/11 was NOT a "we are all going to die" situation for the most
powerful country in the world. We did not have to open torture centers
or invade Iraq or surveil everyone at home or abroad. A more
reasonable response would have been having professional security on
the planes.>

Hi Starchild, Harland, and Oleg. After the disastrous Tax Day
rally we had at Civic Center Plaza about 6 or so years ago, I
vowed I would never do another Tax Day rally or protest, but
somehow I'm kind of up for the idea of doing something as you guys
mentioned this year since our "Tax Day" panel discussion
definitely won't be until June. If we were to do a joint project
between the LPSF and LPSM, we could probably scrape up a decent
number of participants at one location.>>>>>
Thanks!

But are there any post offices with late pick ups on Tax Day any
more? The USPS site did not list them, and a news story said
there were none. The reason, of course, is electronic filing,

We can't possibly cover each one and it seems good to have at

a little break to people in line and hopefully get them
interested in finding out more about us. Maybe arrive at 4:30
and stay till it's too dark for people to see our signs? At this
point, it would help to know who is interested in participating

guess San Mateo and Redwood City, but I have no rational
statistics to support that.>>>>>>>

Tax foundation "celebrates" a day when Americans are done
working to pay taxes, which is currently May 1st in
California. We could also speculate on impact of regulations

is just marking it on Apr 15th when taxes are on everyone's
mind. In any case, liberarians are probably best known to
public for not liking taxes and having some kind of related
activities seems approporiate. In some ideal world, we would
have a meeting open to public where we can answer people's
questions about our movement. We obviously do not have
resources, manpower or publicity to do anything grand, which
is why growing party is important :-)>>>>>>>>>

So to start with, we could at least create a virtual event

getting new people or even less active party members to show
