LPSF Meeting of 10/8/05 - Oct. 26 Marijuana Rally details/Outreach poster idea

Marcy,

Great message! Thanks for putting those important details in writing, and for setting the ball rolling with voter registration.

Here are the details on the October 26 (Wednesday) marijuana rally. The theme is to demand that the Feds reschedule marijuana so it's no longer a Schedule 1 (most restricted category "no medical use") drug, and starts at 12:00 noon at the Civic Center. Not sure when it finishes. I'm supposed to be one of the speakers again, hopefully to a bigger crowd this time. It would be nice to have some additional volunteers there to help with an LPSF table. Since it's shortly before the election, we could promote our ballot recommendations. Best would be to have small, durable slate cards that people could take with them (postcard size and stock?)

I think we should also shoot to have some cooler outreach materials than what we've got now. Here's one idea I had for an LP (or LPSF) poster, which I think I mentioned to some folks at Bryce's party. It would feature a large central panel in the shape of a thought bubble, surrounded by a bunch of smaller circular panels depicting people in different situations with little thought bubbles coming from their heads and feeding into the big thought in the middle (all thinking the same thing), which would read, “Who will stand up for our rights?” People thinking this in the different panels would include a family agonizing over a 1040 form; a young black man being manhandled by police; an elderly woman seated and smoking a joint under a medical marijuana sign outside a dispensary; some kids with skateboards looking up sadly at a ‘No Skateboarding’ sign; a prostitute being led off in handcuffs by police; a businessman looking at a ‘Suspension of Permit’ notice in the window of his business; a gay couple holding hands and watching their straight friends’ driving off in a car festooned with a ‘Just Married’ banner; a family watching their home being destroyed by a bulldozer next to a billboard labeled ‘Redevelopment Agency project with fine print underneath it’; Some Latino migrants looking across the Rio Grande at armed guards standing on a wall with an American flag; some people in New Orleans having their guns confiscated from their home (a la the cartoon attached below). At the bottom of the poster, the words “We will.” Under that, a Libertarian Party logo, and under that, the slogan “We’re all about freedom.” Then the party phone number and website in smaller type. Ideally I envision the pictures done as staged or found photos, but getting them done as illustrated art would probably be easier.

As far as costs, with a little luck we could find an artist to do the art for free for the exposure and to help a good cause. If not for free, we could probably find someone to do it for like $50 or $100 or something. RockBottomPrinting offers 500 full color posters measuring 18" by 24" for $600 (see http://www.rockbottomprinting.com/Price.asp). What do you all think? Would this be a good use of some of our funds?

Yours in liberty,

Hi Starchild,

October 26th, 12:00 noon, I will be at Civic Center with voter
registration cards, a table, some Newsletters. I do not have enough
literature. (We need to coordinate some ordering soon!)

Starchild, I love this idea! I'd vote to use funds for it. I'd also
be willing to contribute $50 toward making it happen. I'm envisioning
it in the style of a "rock poster", the kind with comic book art used
mainly to promote independent rock shows. I know of a guy who could
do it a reasonable cost, (maybe $200?) If you can find someone to do
it cheaper, all the better.

Starchild,

Thanks for moving the poster idea forward. You said you were
wondering what the original poster idea consisted of. Your original
e-mail is below, with all the bubbles you thought of.

Looks like the negotiations between you and Scott are coming along
good. Just a couple of personal opinions: Maybe Scott should know
sooner rather than later what "advertising on our website" means?
Also, it would be great if the poster were ready for some outreach
during the June elections?
