The filing deadline to run for local office this year is this Friday at 5pm. Probably the most bang for the buck (i.e. media visibility for you and your libertarian views) is to run for Supervisor. There are five Supervisorial seats up for election -- Districts 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10. You must live in the district to run. There are 110 people on this list, so my guess is that around 50 of you are eligible to run for Supervisor in one of these districts. If you're not sure which district you live in, you can find out by consulting this map -- http://www.sfgov2.org/ftp/uploadedfiles/elections/PrecinctServices/2010/Jun/2010_CitywidePrecinctMap.pdf.
There are also 3 seats to be filled on the Board of Education (aka the school board) and 3 seats to be filled on the Community College Board. Plus the offices of Public Defender, Assessor-Recorder, and San Francisco's seat on the BART board are up for election.
If libertarians don't run for office, it is guaranteed that those offices will be filled by statists. If libertarians don't speak out and help set the parameters of civic discourse, those parameters will be set by statists. Being a candidate for public office, even if you have little chance of winning or ability to wage an active campaign, gives you a platform to speak out for freedom.
If you think you might be interested in running for one of these offices, let us know ASAP, and we can help you file!
