Iraqi Documents Show al-Qaida Ties

Starchild

Kenneth Timmerman, author or the Newsmax article you posted, informed us in
2004 that Saddam's Weapons of Mass Destruction have been found. See
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=38213. Apparently,
the mainstream media have also succeeded in suppressing this important
revelation.

I couldn't and wouldn't exclude the possibility that members of Saddam
Hussein's regime communicated with al Qaeda terrorists. I'm sure a lot of
bad actors on the international stage have spoken to al Qaeda. The more
important question is whether a secular Iraqi despot could meaningfully
cooperate with the religious zealots of al Qaeda. I think it should take a
lot more than the words of this discredited source to convince us of that.

In liberty,

Marc

Marc,

Well, actually, yes -- I *do* think the mainstream media have largely suppressed information that some weapons of mass destruction were found in Iraq. As the very article you link below explains in credible detail, the finds simply were not large or sensational enough to change the conventionally-received wisdom that "WMDs were not found." Maybe they were not discovered in sufficient quantities to establish that Saddam's possession of them yet posed a serious threat at the time of the invasion, and this may mean it's still fair game to charge the Bush administration of having been deceptive in that respect, but they *were* found. Do you disagree?

Starchild, I am confident that we could find very toxic substances and biological organisms in every city in America in some quantity. Ajar of tomatoes gone bad with botulism would probably suffice as a precursor to WMD..
.

Unfortunately, I'm not in a position to verify or debunk all the
claims made by Timmerman in the earlier WMD article. However, the
following is a direct quote from Charles Duelfer, head of the Iraqi
Survey Group, in his October 6, 2004 testimony to Congress:

"I still do not expect that militarily significant
WMD stocks are cached in Iraq."

This appeared AFTER the Timmerman article, and is not taken from the
mainstream media. I got it direct from the US military at
http://www.maxwell.af.mil/au/awc/awcgate/congress/duelfer_6oct04.pdf.

I will also say that I did hear in the mainstream media that some
weapons were found, but that these were small leftovers from the pre-
1991 period. This seems consistent with the Duelfer report.

In general, I prefer to get my facts (but not my opinions) from the
mainstream media. On the internet, you can find "evidence" for just
about anything. Aside from "evidence" that Saddam and al Qaeda were
much more of a threat than poor fools like me believe, we can also
find "evidence" that 9/11 was a huge government conspiracy - a
contention that I find equally off base. I really believe that if
either of these contentions were true, they would percolate up into
the mainstream media.

Phil,

I don't think the report was talking about that kind of innocuous civilian find.
