+ California Teachers Union Hits #1 in Lobbying. Congratulations to the
California Teachers Association! Who needs high test scores when you've
soared to the top of the list in state lobbying expenditures? The
California Secretary of State's office just released a report showing
CTA spent $5.7 million lobbying lawmakers in the 1999-2000 election
cycle, easily outdistancing second-place Pacific Telesis, as well as
petroleum interests, the state chamber of commerce, power companies,
HMOs, and trial lawyers.
"When the vast majority of money comes out of Sacramento, you have to
access that system and influence that system," CTA President Wayne
Johnson told the Sacramento Bee.
