Carter had the sense to appoint Volker ,and Reagan to keep him. The severe downturn that resulted from Volkers stringent monetary stance laid the groundwork for many years of prosperity.
What is of interest is that when OBama did a photop with economists, I believe yesterday, Volker was sitting directly next to him, arms folded, determined and confident looking. If volker really has Obama ear, we may just get the right policy.
the litmus test will be if Obama is really following Volker, he will quietly tell Pelosi to not call congress back in session for another bailout package
