I guess it just makes the open source anti-Facebook Diaspora project (https://joindiaspora.com/) all the more important. Like others who've joined as alpha testers, I'm disappointed with the pace of development, but the concept is solid and feasible (widely dispersed individual nodes connected in a peer-to-peer sharing network). Each user would administer their own independent node, having complete ownership of their own data, sharing whatever they choose to share, with the freedom to delete their node/data at any time.
Unfortunately, in the current stage of development, alpha testers have to set up their own servers/nodes, so this requires a higher level of tech knowledge than simply logging into a website. Consequently, the whole project is pretty geeeeek-centric right now. But the promise is there, if only the community of developers can deliver on its potential. Let's hope we/they can prove that such an anarchic development environment can actually accomplish something to fight back against this dangerous trend.
