Hamasaki for District Attorney

We recommended a vote for John Hamasaki for DA at our special LPSF ballot recommendations meeting on Tuesday. He is the pro-reform, pro-civil liberties candidate in the race.

There’s a message below from his campaign about how you can help volunteer to ensure San Francisco has a district attorney who isn’t trying to ramp up the “War on Drugs” again, as interim appointee Brooke Jenkins has been doing.

I have a few extra Hamasaki window signs here. If you can use one or more to display at your place or in your vehicle, please let me know so I can hook you up!

Starchild,

What is his position on decriminalizing prostitution, drugs, gambling, and porn?

I’m not sure, Michael. I would encourage you to ask him and his opponents (Brooke Jenkins and Joe Alioto Veronese) that question. I’m pretty sure Hamasaki would be better than they would in terms of not harshly prosecuting people for those and other victimless “crimes”, but it seems unlikely to me that he is so strongly for decriminalizing those things that he wouldn’t prosecute people for violating the law on such matters at all. Despite being attacked as a radical who was just going to ignore drug dealing, I believe his predecessor Chesa Boudin did in fact get some dealers jailed, but this didn’t stop the “law and order” lobby from getting him recalled as too “soft on crime". As is usually the case, we don’t have a perfectly libertarian candidate among the choices.

I met with Jay last week and he made a good point about not endorsing candidates so I’m removing any support for Hamasaki. Since the vote was you and me it’s now tied. Let’s also no longer support non-Libertarian candidates since we don’t have anyone running.

Mission Bowling Club backed out of the event since they have other offers. We didn’t get any support for a social so I suppose it’s back to the drawing board. There’s definitely people out there who want LP people in office. Here’s a superccut from the GA debate.
