Golden Gate Xpress advertising info [2 Attachments]

I just talked to the advertising woman from the Golden Gate Xpress. I think we would want an ad on their website (GoldenGateXpress.org) rather than in the print edition, because the next print issue doesn't come out until next Wednesday, but the web ad can be placed any time as soon as we get them our check.

An ad on their website also runs for a week, but is only $175 (the quarter page print ad, which would be larger, is $225). They offer two online ad options, either a banner across the top of the page (e.g. the "Uniqlo Stonestown Galleria" ad in the attached site screenshot) which by my ruler measures a little less than 7.5" horizontal by a little less than 1" vertical, or a square to the left of the Golden Gate Xpress masthead (e.g. the "Advertise with us!" ad in the screenshot) which by my ruler measures 2.5" by 2.5".

With this in mind, I redesigned our ad to fit in the square space next to the masthead, as this seemed like the best option to combine visibility and credibility (I also tried to use a font similar to theirs and left the background white to match the rest of the page). The second attachment is how the page would look with our ad in that space. The top of their page shown in the attachments looks the same on every page of their site, so people looking at individual articles rather than the main page would still see our ad next to the Golden Gate Xpress masthead. She told me their site gets 600-700 hits per day.

Hi Starchild,

Thank you! I would prefer a print ad. But I am OK with the on-line ad, if that is what others in the ExCom agree with you we should have, or we do not hear from the others in the next day or so. If we decide on the on-line ad, are you planning to ask for the website link for $35.00? If not, that is fine too.

You mentioned that one of your reasons for recommending the on-line ad is that the next issue of the Golden Gate Xpress will not be out until next week, October 23. If we want the ad to run for one week, why would we want it to start any earlier than October 23? Would we not want the ad to run all the way through Election week, or even Election day? This would be October 23 - October 29, or even October 30 - November 5.

Let me know what you think about the week to run the ad.

Thanks again, Starchild.

Marcy

Hi Marcy,

Thanks for your input. I'm not sure whether I think the Golden Gate Xpress print version or web version offers a better advertising value. I asked their advertising rep Eva Charles that question, and she didn't really offer an opinion, although she did call the paper solid and said it's been around for 90 years if I recall correctly. Talking to her I got the impression that a link to our website would be included, but from the rate sheet she sent me (see forwarded email below) it does appear that this might be extra. If we go with the online ad, I would recommend we get that option if it's not included.

Per the conversation at our meeting Saturday I had been operating on the premise that we were trying to get the ads in as soon as possible, but you make a very good point as far as the timing. If we advertise now, we'll get the message out when more people have not yet voted, but if we advertise later, we'll get the message out at a time when there will presumably be more interest in the election and it will be fresher in more people's minds when they vote. In consideration of this, and my view that we ought to be encouraging people to vote on Election Day rather than before -- as I've noted previously, probably on LPSF-discuss, the longer the authorities have the ballots in their hands prior to the election, the greater the opportunities for fraud or malfeasance, it seems to me -- I'm inclined to agree with your recommendation that we advertise the week of October 30 - November 5.

Hi Starchild,

True, I forgot about Aubrey's suggestion that we catch the early and/or mail voters. I was thinking about some information I saw recently that indicated around 38% vote by mail cards, with many of those cards being dropped off by the voter on election day. So for us, same as these voters voting on election day.

My suggestion would be wait for input from the others. If no input received on the specifics of 1) print or on-line ad, and 2) what week to run the ad, go with what you think best.

Were you thinking of advancing the money to LPSF and getting reimbursed? Remember, Les has to reimburse you, since if he does not your expense would be added to the $1000 already in the campaign

Marcy

Hi Marcy, Starchild, and All! Thanks for your work on the ad, Starchild--looks good and matches one of your favorite themes that government employees get more than enough goodies. I'm OK with either online or print versions of the ad--myself, I also prefer print, but I think for college kids online makes more sense since they do everything online these days. As for the week to run, even though I've been pushing for earlier, I'm now OK with the final week right up to election day due to the information that Marcy provided about mail in voters dropping off their cards right up to election day.

Thanks!
Aubrey

Starchild,

Have you gone any further with this, or with the suggestions that followed it?

I have been holding off on running the Facebook ad, waiting for an idea of what you might spend, so we didn't blow our $999.99 overall budget for spending on A.

- Matt

Hi Matt,

Sorry for the delay responding. No, I haven't gone any further yet. I've been likewise waiting for more direction, especially since it seemed like people were leaning more toward advertising in the print version of the Golden Gate Xpress that comes out Oct. 30. Since that's a bigger space, I would tend to go with the original version I'd designed based on last year's ad (copied below), rather than the smaller ad I came up with for the more limited space available to us to advertise with them online, but I'm open to input on that.
