FYI - Marijuana Party growing rapidly

I've heard some LP members worry that our party is too closely associated with drugs. However the following would seem to suggest that far from being identified as "the drug party," we are actually in danger of being outflanked on the issue:

"The California Marijuana Party is a chapter of the United States Marijuana Party, one of the fastest growing political parties in the U.S. Started November 2002, it now has chapters in over 25 states. The United States Marijuana Party is devoted to ending marijuana prohibition and the war on drugs." (full message below)

I've often mentioned Dennis Peron's quote that "all marijuana use is medical" to people, and now I see that the USMP is using it as a slogan, at least for this event. Good for them.

Oh, and by the way, the text of Oakland's measure Z which directed the city to support legalization of marijuana can be found here: http://www.yesonz.org/MZAbout.htm#ord . It passed with a strong 64% of the vote. As far as I know, the Libertarian Party was not noticeably involved in the campaign.

"In a system that prescribes Prozac for shy teenagers,
all marijuana use is medical." ~ California medical
marijuana pioneer Dennis Peron, who opened one of the
first medical marijuana dispensaries in California,
co-authored California's groundbreaking Proposition
215, and angered more conservative medical marijuana
movement comrades by using this argument.

I don't think you spend much time in the East Bay anymore, Starchild.
The EBLP was involved in pushing Measure Z from the beginning with John
and Constance Ericson attending Americans for Safe Access meetings and
Oakland City Council meetings to address the issue, putting out press
releases (thanks to Richard Newell) and promoting the measure several
times in our newsletter. Although we do not appear on the list of
supporters on the website, I believe that was an oversight of the
group's webmaster (note that Judge James Gray shows up there rather
prominently).

Terry,

Thanks for the correction, and sorry to imply the East Bay LP wasn't supporting Measure Z. I don't recall ever getting responses to messages about it that I forwarded to my list of folks in your region, which gave me the impression that no one was doing much, but as you say, I don't spend that much time over there these days, and of course the media cannot be counted on to report a Libertarian role. Glad to hear there was more involvement than I was aware of. I would encourage someone who was involved with the campaign to ask that the LP's name be added to the list of supporters even at this date -- the website is still up, and since it was a groundbreaking measure, I expect that people will continue to look at it.
