FW: MECA NEWSLETTER - OCTOBER

Great - what do you think about putting it on the front page of the CA LP website and make a press release? Who is in charge of those things?

-- Steve

Please name a Libertarian that doesn't support AB205.
I support it.

Doesn't everybody?

Does that put me higher and more to the left than the 100-100
I am already at?

Bruce Cohen
LPCa Board of Directors

Bruce - I don't support it. I agree with Mike D. -
Shouldn't we be working towards removing government
intervention in marriage altogether?

I would hate to see the lp, even in its best
intentions, start playing the continual par leveling
game of the neo-libs. After all, isn't this another
affirmative action type bill?

I'm only aware of Affirmative Action being used in hiring and enrollment. I
don't see how AB205 is Affirmative Action.

Perhaps we need some education about the bill (from
http://www.marriageequalityca.org/ab205.php ):

Rob - I was referring to affirmative action by
definition, not the race agenda (capitalized
Affirmative Action?). In other words, political action
of some arbitrary grouping of people trying to get
ahead to make up for prior woes - at everyone else's
expense.

I also didn't mean to imply that since I am against
AB205 that I am for Knight's (obviously morality
motivated) initiative. I assume he against the bill
because he sees it as a 'gateway drug' into even
stranger arrangements of folk - 3-way marriages,
polygamy, human-animal couplings, etc.

I do agree with you that the LP should capitalize on
this whole thing to show the absurdity legal marriage.

Hope this clears things up.

Also, can anyone tell me if marriage offers any
specific benefits over simple legal incorporation?
I've always heard it's easier for child custody
reasons, but then I watch these divorce cases on TV..

WHAT IS AB 205:

AB 205 - The Domestic Partner Rights and
Responsibilities Act of 2003 [Author:
Goldberg; Sponsor: EQCA]

AB 205 by Assemblymember Jackie Goldberg (D-Los
Angeles) will grant registered
domestic partners nearly all of the rights,
benefits, and obligations
currently available only to spouses under state law.

The rights and responsibilities extended to domestic
partners and their
children under AB 205 include: decision making
authority for funeral
arrangements and disposition of remains, community
property, protection from
threats and crimes against the families of public
officials, custody
provisions and child support obligations, access to
divorce court, and death
benefits for surviving partners of firefighters and
police officers. The bill
will also require mutual responsibility for debts,
disclosures of
conflicts-of-interest, and joint assessment of
income for determining
eligibility for state government assistance
programs.

AB 205 cannot provide same-sex couples with any of
the over 1000 federal
rights or benefits granted automatically to spouses.
However, AB 205 will
provide domestic partners all the rights and
responsibilities that the
California legislature is able to grant with a
majority vote.

STATUS OF BILL

Signed by Governor Davis on Friday, September 19,
2003, at the LGBT Center in
San Francisco.
